Tournament Rules on Time Limit

Here are some online tournament rules that we should be aware of when playing chess. Specifically, we will deal with time limit and how it affects our play—all very crucial in winning at chess online.

In most chess tournaments time limit is often observed. Online, time limit is done automatically by the chess site software and is indicated by a running digital time indicator on screen. It shows how much time is left for each player and how much has been consumed so far.

We must play according to the time limit allowable or else lose in the game when we run out of time. The game automatically ends even without a checkmate.

Most tournaments for scholastic players observe the 45-minute time limit. This means only 45 minutes are allotted each player to effect a checkmate. The players should always be conscious of how much time is left and divide the allotted time wisely. With adult tournaments each player is given 40 moves to be done in the first 2 hours of the game and then a final 1 hour to effect a checkmate.

Even if no checkmate has been accomplished, when a player consumes all 2 hours without completing the 40 moves, the player loses. However, if we have done the required 40 moves within 2 hours and have some more time left, a bonus one hour is given to accomplish a checkmate. These are the online tournament rules pertinent.

Clocks for time limit are of 2 types: digital and mechanical. The mechanical type has a gradually rising mini flag working to indicate running time. As we use up our allotted time the flag rises until it reaches the top to indicate that our time is used up.

When the flag finally hits the ceiling it descends to tell us we have no more time left. If we have not consummated the 40 moves required within the time limit we lose, even if we're ahead in the game by the strength of the chess pieces left.

With digital clocks, the time-limit mechanism is through a beep and flash. The time limit constraint usually puts pressure on players and affects their play. This is true with fast-pace tournaments. The key here is fast thinking, quick analysis, and the ability to think ahead of the opponent. Some tournaments still use mechanical clocks. Some feel that these are more accurate than digital clocks.

Online tournament rules on time limits are essential. They have a major effect on our play and strategy.
