Using a Chess Board Online

It's important to know how to use a chess board online. Graphically it looks like the traditional board we use—with the same pieces, number of squares and colors—but it is operated quite differently. Actually, online chess boards are a lot easier to handle.

An online board is always setup with just a click on "start" or "new game." Once we have chosen what color of pieces to play, we find our pieces always at the bottom of the board on screen at the start of a game.

The board minutely informs us of our and the opponent's updated positions. Not only this, the board actually informs us about all the details we need to know while playing, especially in a tournament.

For instance, it tells us of the latest move done on the board, the number of moves we or the opponent has done, the time left for us or the opponent, and notated moves from first to last.

The board also leaves the path made by our moves highlighted so we and the opponent can trace where the piece moved came from. This updates the players of the latest move done on the board in case their attention on the board was distracted awhile.

Then, the online chess board also has notations. Notations are numbers and alphabets placed on the sides of the board facing a square each. On the top and bottom sides are the numerals, and the lateral sides are the alphabets. These are called coordinates for notation. They are used by the computer program to record and save all moves done on the online chess board. Aside from a graphical record of every move, we have notations.

Graphical records are re-plays of moves in a game we watch on screen. Notations are records we read. Notations pinpoint the exact moves and locations of chess pieces on the board through coordinates. For instance, d2-d4 at the start of a game means a pawn is moved forward from its original formation to a square two steps away.

Specifically, the fourth pawn is moved two squares forward from d2 to d4. The column of squares is represented by "d" and the row of squares is by "2." Where the row and column intersects is the position indicated by the coordinate.

Thus, an online chess board has lots of features that help simplify everything for us. All we need to do then is to focus on the game and how to win it.
